Review - Spinning Around by Sonic Whip

A mostly unknown rock band from the Netherlands (two Dutch albums in a row? Crazy.), Sonic Whip released it's second album since 2021's Triskelion, and frankly, leaves a lot to be desired. While The Tempo may not recommend this EP, we acknowledge that recommendations are personal, and this EP does have redeeming qualities that many listeners will love.

Sonic Whip delivers an EP with energetic, dance inspired rock music not often heard in the current market where dance is often considered its own genre. That high energy, movement inspired tempo combined with some impressive performance and an excellent mix and master creates a dance/rock record those of you who like to head bang while moving your hips will absolutely devour.

Where Spinning Around falls short in my estimation is in the lyrics, which are uninspiring to be forgotten and ultimately meaningless. Perhaps this is on par for the genre of dance music in general, which is more focused on the atmosphere created in the space than the content of the media itself, but when placed alongside mostly uninteresting melodies, the entire picture is something I would comfortably say is only going to be appealing to people who are looking for something very specific, and that something being "unoffensive, entertaining, dancable, rock music."

The Tempo gives Spinning Around by Sonic Whip a 2/5. I do believe that this band has more potential as the trio is obviously very skilled at performing, but I would only be excited to listen again if I knew their composition had deepened somewhat.
